Witt Fetter
b. 1994, Los Angeles
Lives and works in New York, NY
Witt Fetter’s paintings examine the global reach of American culture, incisively examining the condition of images within contemporary society. From a multitude of sources—the public domain, stock photo databases, Youtube videos, satellite imagery, and personal memory—Fetter draws charged connections between seemingly disparate events. Focusing on points in recent history that are too fresh to have been fully digested by cultural critics, Fetter’s works are often described as contemporary history paintings. Past works have depicted Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears and Lindsay Lohan’s infamous “Bimbo Summit”, the Situation Room during the assassination of Osama Bin Laden, gender reveal parties gone dangerously wrong, and Caitlyn Jenner piloting her freefalling aircraft. While rooted in a depiction of the real world, Fetter’s paintings conjure an imaginary, alternative dimension through a singular color palette and repeating compositional structures. Rather than offering an objective reenactment of their historical subjects, Fetter’s paintings attend to a more urgent need of envisioning the self through images of the world both present and past, personal and global.
