Witt Fetter
Witt Fetter
b. 1994, Los Angeles
Lives and works in New York, NY
In paintings depicting the visual artifacts of modern life, Witt Fetter reimagines moments from popular culture, history and her own memories. Through her singular use of color and composition, recognizable imagery is recontextualized in an ethereal and uncanny aesthetic atmosphere. The subjects of Fetter’s paintings include “gender reveal” explosions, Caitlyn Jenner piloting an aircraft in a state of free-fall, an inflatable slide in the shape of the sinking Titanic, the Situation Room of the White House, the Matterhorn ride at Disneyland, and a self-portrait of the artist as a stand-in for Princess Diana. In her solo exhibitions, Fetter invents poetic connections between disparate images, which in turn reveal new aesthetic and conceptual patterns. Her choice of subject matter is motivated by an autobiographical subtext, with each painting marking a moment of identification between the artist’s lived experience and the world around her. The self-referential gesture in Fetter’s work extends to her engagement with art history and the context of painting within the deterritorialized landscape of contemporary art. In a historical moment that appears suspended between an accelerating present and a diminishing future, Fetter utilizes the delineated space of the canvas to locate a sense of contemplation, clarity and belonging amidst the haze of contemporary disorientation.
